Deep Tissue Massage in Rockhampton

Firm knuckle pressure applied to the lower back during deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage works into the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around it, using firm, sustained pressure and slow strokes. It is the treatment of choice for long-standing tension that has not responded to lighter work, and for the dense, ropey tissue that forms around old injuries.

Firm is not the same as painful

There is a persistent belief that deep tissue massage has to hurt to be effective. It does not. Pressure that makes you brace or hold your breath is counterproductive, because a guarded muscle cannot release.

The pressure we use should feel strong and specific, and you should be able to breathe through it and stay relaxed. We check in as we work, and we would rather you tell us it is too much than endure it quietly. Progress comes from working at the edge of what the tissue will allow, not past it.

What it helps with

Deep tissue work is generally directed at:

Afterwards

It is normal to feel tender for a day or two, in the way you would after a heavy training session. Gentle movement, warmth and water help. Sharp or worsening pain is not expected. If you experience it, stop and contact us.

Deep tissue work is often most effective spaced out rather than repeated frequently, giving the tissue time to adapt between sessions.
